Adolescent Knee Pain: Osgood Schlatter’s Disease
What is it: Osgood Schlatters disease is a very common cause of adolescent knee pain, especially in young athletes, usually in young boys and girls between the ages of 12-15. In young athletes, this condition is a common problem during physical activity.
What you need to know: This problem is caused by the patellar tendon pulling on the tibial tuberosity especially in adolescents as the this area is located at a growth plate (area of cartilage at the end of bones). As children increase physical activity, there can be an increase force on the “soft” bone, resulting in pain, tenderness, and sometimes inflammation.
What can I do for my child: Fortunately, there are very direct treatments for reducing the pull on the knee. By addressing the movements and strength of the area above and below the knee, there is the opportunity for less “pull” from the patellar tendon.
